How to Build Confidence Before Your First Solo Trip

Planning a solo trip is exciting, but if we’re being real, it can also feel totally intimidating. The fear of getting lost, being alone, or just not knowing what to expect is very normal and totally valid. Before my first solo trip, I wasn’t sure I could actually go through with it. But confidence isn’t something you need before you go — it’s something you can build, step by step, starting now.
1. Take Yourself on “Practice Adventures”
Start local. Go out for a solo coffee, eat at a restaurant alone, take a local day trip without anyone else. These little outings help you learn how to be alone — and how empowering it can feel.
2. Make a Plan (but Stay Flexible)
Confidence grows with preparation. Make a rough itinerary, research neighborhoods, pin places on Google Maps, and download offline tools. Having a flexible plan gives you control without pressure.
3. Learn a Few Key Phrases
Even if you’re going to a tourist-friendly place, learning 5–10 basic phrases (hello, thank you, help, where is…) builds confidence fast. It also helps you feel more connected and respectful.

4. Pack Thoughtfully
Knowing you have the right essentials can help calm your nerves. Don’t overpack. Instead, focus on comfort, safety and things that make you feel like yourself. Bring one outfit that makes you feel confident, and don’t forget a journal.
5. Set Up Safety Check-ins
Schedule times to check in with someone back home. Share your itinerary with a friend or family member. When you know you have a safety net, it’s easier to take that leap with confidence.
6. Create Your “Why” List
Write down why you want to go on this solo trip. For freedom, healing, growth, challenge? Revisit that list when you feel scared. It’ll remind you how strong your “why” really is.

I really appreciate how this post breaks confidence-building into realistic, small steps. At Sweat & Smile, I teach the same principle: start with manageable fitness goals that fit your life, build consistency, and trust yourself to grow. Whether it’s solo travel or a new workout routine, confidence and progress both start with showing up. Beautifully written!
This is a great read for those planning a first solo trip. It’s on my bucket list to travel solo, but I haven’t had the chance yet. I love the idea of the why list. Aligning your trip to a greater purpose makes for a memorable and fulfilling experience. Love how to acknowledge how to manage the potential fear if it emerges.
I love traveling and have had the chance to travel solo before, so I totally understand the mix of excitement and nerves that come with it. I agree that these tips are very practical and useful, especially for anyone who’s nervous about taking their first solo trip. Building confidence step by step, like the post suggests, makes the whole experience feel much more manageable. Thank you for sharing such valuable advice!
